Australia: Dressing the part--GOP candidate turns to the sweater vest

The Sydney Morning Herald

Republican's vested interests out of the closet

N THE battle for the Republican nomination, Rick Santorum has deployed the dubious sartorial power of the sleeveless sweater. Or in language that fashion-conscious Republicans may prefer, the former Pennsylvanian senator is rocking a sweater vest right now.

The Santorum sleeveless sweater trend is gaining momentum. So far he's been sighted in at least four variations of the style during meet-and-greets, in an attempt to stand out from his besuited rivals.

The Santorum camp is so proud of this wardrobe strategy that it has ordered similar tank tops with an embroidered campaign logo.

Meanwhile, the vests have their own Twitter feed - @FearRicksVest - and a website that feeds into a pro-Santorum Facebook page. Mr Santorum himself has told The New York Times he is not ''anti-sleeve''.

As an item of clothing, the sleeveless sweater has at least three sartorial registers: it says either Ivy League, geek or senior citizen. So which is the champion of the Republican right looking to channel? ''I'm thinking the sweater vest makes me look a little older, and that might be a good thing,'' said Mr Santorum, pointing out that despite his 53 years he has been mistaken for 32.
