PJ: As a child, I would never have imagined a time when the US and Russia shook hands in friendship. Reagan called it the "Evil Empire" while the USSR vilified America. It was a hatred and distrust so deep that some still have trouble reconciling themselves to a world in which the two countries have established diplomatic ties.
The same unimaginable change is now taking place in the Middle East. Only a year ago, some scholars argued that democracy would be incompatible with Islam. But now protesters across the Middle East and Northern Africa are demanding democratic rule. The inconceivable might be happening again.
