Obama, Sarkozy offer condolences and aid
THE United States, France and the United Nations and around the world have started offering Japan earthquake aid after the nation was rocked by one of the most powerful earthquakes ever.
US President Barack Obama on Friday offered his 'condolences' to the people of Japan and said his country stood ready to help them after a massive earthquake and tsunami.
'The United States stands ready to help the Japanese people in this time of great trial. The friendship and alliance between our two nations is unshakeable, and only strengthens our resolve to stand with the people of Japan as they overcome this tragedy.'
French President Nicolas Sarkozy wrote in a letter of Japan's Prime minsiter Naoto Kan: 'France is ready to respond to any possible request that Japan may wish to make in order to handle this tragedy.'
The UN also said it is ready to send search and rescue teams to quake-hit Japan if the Asian state needs help. 'Thirty international search and rescue teams are on alert, they are monitoring the situation and ready to help should Japan request aid,' said
At least eight people were reported killed after a huge earthquake of magnitude 8.9 rocked Japan and tsunamis up to 10m high slammed into its Pacific coastline on Friday. -- AFP
