U.S. urges Bahrain to ensure detainees' security
The U.S. State Department on Wednesday urged the government of Bahrain to ensure the security of all detainees after a number of Bahrainis died in custody of the authorities.
"We are deeply concerned by the deaths of both him and several other individuals while in custody of Bahraini authorities," said State Department spokesman Mark Toner, referring to Karim Fakhrawi, a Bahraini who died after being arrested.
Toner called on the Bahraini government to abide by its commitment to "transparent judicial proceedings conducted in full accordance with Bahraini law and Bahrain's international legal obligations."
More than 20 people have died since the unrest in Bahrain started in mid-February.
