UK: Palin supports birther Trump

PJ: An eye-rolling "Only in America" story that will not go away no matter how many officials have certified that President Obama was indeed born in the state of Hawaii and is a natural born US citizen and therefore qualified to serve as President. Palin herself said in February that the issue was a distraction and did not believe the issue had merit but is now jumping to defend Donald Trump's crusade. For another take on this issue, you may want to read: http://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-palin-not-born-in-usa-2011-4 Yes, only in America will people have to invent time travel to go back to the very time and place of a person's birth in order to certify their legitimacy.

Update: Take a look at some of the facts that both Ms. Palin and Mr. Trump chose to ignore: http://www.slate.com/BLOGS/blogs/weigel/archive/2011/04/11/the-facts-of-donald-trump.aspx

Birther u-turn: Sarah Palin jumps on the Trump bandwagon and backs his Obama investigation

* ‘More power to him - he's digging in there,' Mrs Palin said
* Support comes after Donald Trump surges in Republican polls
* In February Palin called 'birther' issue a 'distraction'

Sarah Palin has jumped on the bandwagon of Donald Trump's right to doubt President Obama’s birthplace and launch an investigation to find out the truth.

The former Alaska governor's comments signal a u-turn from when she said in February that the ‘birther’ issue is a ‘distraction’ from more important issues.

She still believes the President was born in Hawaii, but says it’s fair to ask the questions, as Trump flies past her in Republican presidential candidate polls.

'I appreciate that "the Donald" wants to spend his resources in getting to the bottom of something that so interests him and many Americans,’ Mrs Palin told Fox News.

‘More power to him - he's not just throwing stones from the sidelines, he's digging in there.’

This comes after she said in February at a Long Island Association meeting: ‘It's distracting. It gets annoying. Let's stick with what really matters.’

The President has released a ‘certificate of live birth’ which many watchdogs claimed definitively proves he was born in the U.S. But 'birther' sceptics want more evidence.

Dr Chiyome Fukino, the former director of Hawaii's Department of Health, has reviewed Mr Obama’s birth certificate twice and stressed it is definitely real.

He told NBC the whole debate is ‘kind of ludicrous at this point’.

'I think he was born in Hawaii because there was the birth announcement put in a newspaper,’ Mrs Palin told Fox News.

‘But obviously if there's something there that the President doesn't want people to see in that birth certificate then he's going to great lengths to make sure that it isn't shown.

'That's kind of perplexing for a lot of people.

‘But Donald Trump may get to the bottom of it because he's spending the resources that probably would be necessary to do some investigation.'

Trump is looking at running for the presidency in 2012 and has heated up the debate over Mr Obama's place of birth in the last few weeks.

Latest polls put Trump behind former Massachusetts govern Mitt Romney and tied with ex-Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, as Palin’s support dive-bombs.

Neither Trump nor Palin have officially declared their candidacy yet.
