"Only the harshest of her opponents truly believe Ms Palin can be blamed for the actions of an apparently deranged gunman, despite the now infamous map that she posted online showing rifle sights over Ms Giffords' district, with the command: "Don't retreat: RELOAD."
"But as Americans reflect on the toxicity of what currently passes for political discourse, it is Ms Palin's name that sticks to this tragedy, an association that will almost certainly come to mark a turning point in her political career, and could even end any ambitions she had for running for president."
"Her spokeswoman, Rebecca Mansour, did not help her when she went on television to claim that the crosshairs on her map were not rifle sights at all, but "a surveyor's symbol". Unhappily for Ms Palin, the internet remembers. Eagle-eyed bloggers have retrieved a Facebook post she wrote in March last year - three days after the map was published - clarifying its message for anyone left in doubt."
