US election 2012: America's war with Satan, by Rick Santorum
Modern America is locked in a "spiritual war" between good and evil and is under direct attack from Satan, according Rick Santorum, the evangelic Catholic surging ahead in the race to take on Barack Obama this November.
By Peter Foster
Mr Santorum set out his starkly Manichean vision of America in a speech in 2008, but he has been sticking to his position while on the campaign trail this week, further polarising the already divisive contest for the Republican nomination.
"Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that have so deeply rooted in the American tradition," he told an audience at Florida's Ave Maria University in 2008.
"The problem for Santorum is not the Republican primaries, it's the general election," argued Mr Luntz. "He's surging because his positions are Republican positions. Unfortunately, the may not be American positions."
