Andrew CoyneEven so, there was a consistency of message throughout, made explicit by the monoton0us invocation of the phrase We Built It, a reference to President Obama’s supposed declaration to small business people that they “didn’t build that.” (The quote is wildly out of context: the “that” to which he referred was the road that runs by their business.) Every one of the speakers sang the praises of self-reliance and individual initiative — as distinct, one was made to understand, from the smothering embrace of government. Virtually every one, it should be said, had some story of triumph over adversity — penniless parents, an autistic child — to back it up: these are not your stereotypical country club Republicans. Even Mrs. Romney, she of the two Cadillacs and the Olympic horse, told persuasively of past struggles.
