US election: Death of Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya becomes election row

The death of Ambassador Chris Stevens was thrust into the US presidential election campaign Wednesday, as Mitt Romney accused Barack Obama of apologising to the Islamist extremists responsible.

Having abandoned a political ceasefire on September 11 with a late-night statement describing the comments from Mr Obama's embassy in Egypt as "disgraceful", Mr Romney found himself almost alone among prominent Republicans in focusing on the President's handling of the situation. He was however joined by Sarah Palin, the former vice-presidential nominee.
